At-Large Chapter - Statewide

Purposes, Goals, & Objectives of the NFBAR At Large Chapter

The purpose of the At Large Chapter shall be to advance the general welfare of the blind in areas of Arkansas in which no NFB chapter exists, in the state as a whole, and in the nation; to function as an integral part of the National Federation of the Blind of Arkansas; to serve as a vehicle for collective action by the blind not represented by geographic chapters; to operate as a mechanism through which the blind and interested sighted persons can plan and carry out programs to improve the quality of life of the blind; to provide a means of collective action for parents of blind children; to forward the interests of blind students and provide them with a means of joint action and expression; to promote the vocational, cultural, and social advancement of the blind; to achieve the integration of the blind into society on a basis of equality with the sighted; and to take any other action which will improve the overall condition and standard of living of the blind.

Our Meetings

We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 PM via Zoom . Please contact President Tanya VanHouten for the participation details to attend the meetings.

My name is Tanya Harris-VanHouten. I have had a severe visual impairment since birth. As a result, I have learned to function independently and successfully in this sighted world. It has not been easy, and I will honestly say that it has not always been fun. That is one reason I love the National Federation of the Blind: there are so many people who know, or have a good idea of, what you may be going through if you are struggling with vision loss.

I have dual master’s degrees in vocational rehabilitation counseling and rehabilitation teaching of the blind. I have worked directly and indirectly in the rehabilitation field for more than 20 years. This, coupled with my personal experiences, gives me unique insight into what people experience on their journey with vision loss.

As president of the At-Large Chapter, I strive to be inclusive and inviting to all participants. I welcome you to join us on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00.
